The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a national-level exam for admission into top management institutes in India. Conducted by the IIMs, it tests problem-solving, data interpretation, logical reasoning, and verbal ability — skills essential for success in business. Scoring well opens doors to IIMs, FMS, MDI, and hundreds of top MBA programs.

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks (or equivalent CGPA). Relaxation applies for SC, ST, and PWD/DA categories. Final-year students can also apply. There is no age limit, and foreign nationals are eligible too.

CAT has three sections: Verbal & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA). Topics include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, logical reasoning, and data interpretation — along with analytical and critical thinking skills.

CAT is conducted online over 2 hours. The paper consists of 68 questions across three sections, each with a 40-minute time limit. Questions are a mix of MCQs and TITA (Type In The Answer) questions. The total marks are 204.

Each correct MCQ answer earns +3 marks; incorrect MCQ answers carry −1 (negative marking). TITA questions have no negative marking. Scores are normalised across sessions, and scaled scores out of 204 are used for final selection by business schools.

Starting 6–12 months before the exam is recommended — it gives you time to cover the full syllabus, take regular mocks, identify weak areas, and revise thoroughly. That said, the most important factor is consistency. Some students crack CAT in 4 months with focused preparation.
